ABOUT SALISA BRITTON
I have always valued the individual human experience, and thus believe that the unique human experience of our world should be explored with as much respect as the exploration of other worldly truths. It is known that the commercial world of art celebrates perfection. As someone who disagrees with this I have attempted to create artworks which break away from the notion of desirable perfection, and thus have made materiality exploration one of the focuses of my body of work. Exposing the surfaces and human-inflicted imperfections within my artworks bridges the gap between the viewer and the organic process of creating a piece of art. It is most exciting for myself to break free from the traditional use of a canvas, and explore what else painting could be; to see how I can surpass the traditional expectations and limitations of 'painting'. The restriction of touching artworks in galleries also fascinates me, and has inspired me to create intense interactive alien experiences for viewers to explore with their senses - to bring painting into a full body experience. These playful, curious and fascinating works not only connect viewer and artwork through the use of sensory exploration, but also dares to dive into the dark end of painting; how far can painting be pushed and shoved until it becomes something else? By exploring these notions, I break free from the stereotypes of traditional painting, creating curiously touchable works; works which are given a soul through viewer interaction, and in turn reminds the viewer of their human phenomena.
